How to Apply Scale Precision Paint Masks

PAINT MASKING PROCESS:

Preparation:
The paint masking process begins with a properly prepared and painted model surface. Nothing out of the ordinary, just your standard surface prep / soapy water wash prior to primer and/or base coat should do. Masks are cut from low tack vinyl stencil material with a tackiness similar to or less than masking tape but, as with masking tape, a poorly prepared surface may result in paint lifting when removing masks. Although not necessary, a thoroughly dried gloss coat is recommended prior to the masking process. This gloss coat helps to seal the edges of the mask thus preventing paint bleed-through when too heavy a coat of paint is applied. It also helps in the event of an unfortunate mistake by allowing you to wipe the unwanted paint off without damaging the painted surface below the gloss coat. Masks can however be used successfully over matte paints by following the simple rule of LIGHT COATS OF PAINT.

Masking and Painting:
Once your model's paint has cured, carefully apply the mask and lightly burnish the edges. Apply additional masking to prevent overspray. When painting, mist light coats at as close to a 90 degree angle as you can. This right angle spray pattern will prevent paint from shooting under the mask. Continue with these light coats, allowing each to dry in between, until the desired shade is reached. For multi-layer/color masks, allow first color to dry thoroughly before applying second mask layer; I usually allow 24hrs between color layers.

Natural Metal Finish (NMF):
When using paint masks over Model Master Metalizers, I recommend, if you are going to use a sealer, that you apply paint masks prior to sealer. Paints and sealers tend to lift easily from the MM Metalizers when masking tape or low tack vinyl masks are removed.
I have masked directly over Alclad II without problems. I don't use a sealer with Alclad, therefore I was unable to test application of masks over sealer on top of Alclad II.

Below you will find some picture tutorials showing the paint masking process. These are just suggestions on our part. There are other methods out there so use the one that you are more comfortable with.
